One of the main tourist attractions in mainland Honduras is the magnificent Maya Archaeological Site of Copán. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1980 by the UNESCO, Copan is arguably one of the greatest Maya city-states of the Classic period. The site is currently gaining popularity among scholars and mystics due to the notorious Maya Long Count Calendar milestone, as the end of the current time cycle, around the 23rd and 25th of December 2012, draws near. The Lenca Trail is a nice off-the-beaten-path route that includes interesting centuries old little towns with colonial churches and ethnic groups that still keep to their ancient customs.
